This Super Bowl ad is a very specific example of how a viral song can be used to significantly impact the desirability of a mundane product. Here, the alternate rendition of PSY’s Gangnam Style makes these pistachios seem vibrant and exciting. While the song arguably has little actual musical merit, its viral popularity and instant recognizability are able to boost the brand, Wonderful Pistachios, and show that it is in tune with pop culture. Wonderful Pistachios has in fact built an entire ad campaign around this idea of integrating an everyday object with pop culture–here are a few more examples:
