Why buy something for $100 when you can make one that looks just like it, or with more style, for $20? This trend has probably gained popularity through the recession, but remained desirable since it allows people to express their creativity and thriftiness. DIY projects are desirable because people have to invest their time and energy into them but in the end they achieve a sense of accomplishment. DIY represents a type of adventure that people have complete control over– a safe but fun option for everyone. The trend also represents a throwback to arts and crafts. Finally, DIY allows people to share, using social media, their projects and designs.
