Our class discussion on Monday about Pavlov’s hierarchy of needs made me start thinking about products like Hunter Boots — they are products that the average consumer can justify buying (satisfy those bottom tier basic needs of warmth, shelter, etc), but allow for personal specialization that satisfy those top tier needs of being creative, different, unique, inspired, etc. Items like Hunter Boots create the belief that you are safe within the accepted norm, but still somehow manage to be creative within that. A kind of very safe rebellion.
