This past New York Fashion Week, Ralph Lauren hosted its runway show in a small, intimate café, aesthetically designed around the white black and gold tones of the brand’s new designs. What was really interesting about this show in particular (in contrast to all the other shows happening this NYFW) was how scaled-down it was; how it revolved around creating this intimate experience for both its attendees and its models; how it made something as small and simple as a café a glamorous, fashionable event. Guests were actually able to munch on small café treats while models floated around the café, showcasing Ralph Lauren’s new collection, with no stage, runway, or spotlights. This unique approach to a runway show proved to be a huge success for the brand – it is listed as #1 in Harper’s Bazaar’s “The best of New York Fashion Week autumn/winter 2019”. Some important design notes here are, first, how the entire collection and the café’s design utilized the simple, limited palette of white, black, and gold. Additionally, how the simplicity actually allowed the RL team to turn something as, perhaps, “un-classy” as a café into an elegant affair. Overall, Ralph Lauren’s NYFW café runway show took a unique, seemingly impractical idea and turned it into a huge success, wholly due to the design elements which came to play.
