I don’t typically think about enterprise software, but I’ve lately been thinking about the difficulties of designing for enterprise. Something that’s beautiful and minimal, for example, may not actually work well in an enterprise environment because information and familiarity tends to take precedence over general audience usability. We use Airtable to manage the News workflow at the Harvard Crimson, and I think it’s struck a great balance between aesthetics and information. Each screen holds a lot of information about individual news stories (writers, editing times, paper date, editors, story status, etc.). Yet the rounded, modern design and the usage of color helps differentiate editors, stories, and other important information, making it all that much more digestible at a glance.
